It is therefore arguable that this period was characterised by irreconcilable opposites in politics, religion and art. Shakespeare chose to dramatise the conflict of his day. The Renaissance was the ‘rebirth’ of classical learning but was also the time when Science challenged many traditional Christian beliefs, and the religious turmoil which resulted in conlfict between Catholics and Protestants, evidence in, say, the Gunpowder plot and the Spanish Armada. As an audience we are constantly being reminded of the conflict which is reflected within the era in which the play was written.
